These are the best tools that helped grow my organic traffic by around 31% in the last year. Today, I share my experience with the best keyword research tools.
The best keyword research tools are slightly common, such as search engine visibility, boosting organic traffic, and helping to find keywords.
This document has been updated to consider SEO changes in 2024 and guides you on selecting the appropriate keyword research tools for your needs.
Semrush is the most popular and reliable tool for keyword research and works slightly differently from other tools.
Semrush working process:
First, type your competitor’s name in the field at the top of the page.
Domain Overview:
You can check your selected country. For example, if your main audience is from the UK, you can find out which other countries’ audiences visited your website. You can change the location and see where visitors come to your site and how many people visit by phone and desktop.
Organic Research:
Organic Research is used for:
- Keywords: the approximate monthly count of organic visitors derived from Google.
- Traffic: the expected monthly visitor count.
- Traffic Cost: based on Google Ads CPC, this shows how valuable this traffic is.
Top Organic Keywords:
You can find Top Organic Keywords easily.
Organic Search Positions
Keyword Magic Tool:
The Keyword Magic Tool is one of my favorites in Semrush. This tool mines Semrush’s vast keyword library (over 25 billion terms) to provide keyword recommendations.

Ahrefs is another tool that works for keyword research. I mostly like “Keyword Explorer” in Ahrefs; it’s an amazing tool. You can also use Ahrefs to conduct keyword research for Google, YouTube, and Amazon.
Its feature set has also expanded with time.
Ahrefs’ primary users nowadays are:
- Small company owners who manage their own websites’ SEO
- SEO companies with a large clientele
- “In-house” marketers who manage their employer’s online presence
- Affiliate marketers in charge of numerous websites
- SEO experts who counsel customers on their SEO approach
SEO Dashboard:
Track your unlimited number of verified projects and see your Google Search Console data in the Ahrefs Dashboard. You can monitor your site’s performance of multiple URLs with profiles, organize your projects with folders, and organize your keywords with a keyword list.
Site Explorer:
Research organic traffic and keywords, research competitor backlinks, and see what keywords your competitors are bidding on.
Keyword Explorer:
Find valuable keywords in your niche and study them in detail. Discover thousands of keywords.
03. Google Search Console:
Google Search Console is a product of Google. It has a simple interface but some amazing features like Overview, Performance, URL Inspection, Page Index, and more. I used Google Search Console for my website to begin with.
You can easily find “Opportunity Keywords” and use on-page SEO and sitemaps.
04. Google Trends
Google Trends is a tool to see what’s hot on Google Search. You can find out previous hot Google searches and compare one keyword with another or with competitors.
05. Google Keyword Planner
Google Keyword Planner is another free tool for keyword research. It is essential for anyone running a Google Ads campaign. It provides estimated search volumes, keyword suggestions, and competition levels.
At last, it’s important to note that search volume data and keyword planners can be inaccurate at times.
