What is a Network

What is a network? A network is a group of devices that are connected in such a manner that they can share information and resources. To create a network, we must have several basic components: network devices, network media, network interfaces, and network protocols.

When we talk about network devices, we typically think of a group of connected computers. However, a network can also include other items such as servers, printers, game consoles like the PS4, mobile phones, and devices like the Amazon Echo (also known as a voice-controlled intelligent personal assistant). Generally speaking, these devices are called nodes or hosts.

Network devices must be connected somewhere. This connection can be in the form of copper wire (communicating through electrical signals), fiber optic cables (communicating through light pulses), or a wireless connection using radio waves. The cables or signals used to connect the host to the network are referred to as network media or medium. There are different types of network media.

Interface:

The network host should be equipped with an appropriate interface to establish the connection. In some cases, a network adapter is integrated into the motherboard, especially when connecting via copper media like twisted pair cable. When connecting to a different type of media, such as fiber optic, an engineer will likely need to install an additional network adapter to ensure a suitable connection. The network interface card (NIC) converts digital signals from the device into a signal that can be transmitted through the network medium.

Protocol:

A protocol is an agreed set of rules on how information is formatted and sent over the network. If the protocols used by different devices are incompatible, communication between them cannot occur—similar to trying to communicate with someone who doesn’t speak your language. For example, if four computers have four different operating systems, communication is still possible as long as they are configured to use the same protocol. The protocol governs how data is assembled and unpacked when received by another computer on the same network, providing the rules for communication between hosts.

In addition, a network comprises four main components: network devices (nodes or hosts), network media (cable or wireless media connecting devices), network interfaces (connecting hosts to the medium and converting signals), and a common protocol (a standardized set of rules for communication between hosts.)

FAQ

What is network short answer?

A network is essentially a collection of computers and other devices connected to exchange data. Each device on the network, known as a node, has its unique address, which is a numerical value.

What is a network in ICT?

A computer network is a system that links two or more computing devices to transmit and share information. These devices range from mobile phones to servers and can be connected through physical wires like fiber optics or wirelessly.

What is network and internet?

A network is a collection of computer systems and devices connected using LAN, WAN, CAN, or HAN technologies. The Internet is a global system that links various types of electronic devices worldwide, requiring minimal hardware. However, setting up a local network involves various hardware components.

Why is it called a network?

The simplest way to explain the Internet is by calling it “the network of networks.” It connects computer networks from around the world into a single entity. It’s not a single large computer, but rather a vast collection of interconnected networked computers.

What is network and data?

A data network is a system enabling two or more computers to communicate with each other. The most common type of data network is a Local Area Network (LAN), which connects computers and other devices within a small area like a home, office, or school. A data network can also be a Wide Area Network (WAN), covering larger geographical areas.

What is a network or Internet?

A network refers to a collection of connected devices within a confined area, such as a home, office, or campus. In contrast, the Internet is a global network of interconnected networks, spanning the entire planet and linking billions of devices across diverse locations.
